Betty Mbitjana

Betty was born c1945 in the Utopia area. She is the daughter of renowned artist Minnie Pwerle and sister of artist Barbara Weir. Betty paints the women’s ceremony (awelye), bush plum and bush berry dreamings.Betty’s paintings depict the designs that women would paint on their bodies and the dancing tracks which are made in the sand during awelye. The designs were painted on the women’s upper bodies with ochre, charcoal and ash. Betty uses a bright, colourful palette to reproduce these designs on canvas.Betty’s paintings are vibrant works of art and highly desirable for that reason.
