Dorothy Robinson Napangardi

Dorothy was born c1950 in the Mina Mina area of the Tanami Desert. She belongs to the Warlpiri language group. During the Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime), ancestral women of the Napangardi gathered to collect ceremonial digging sticks that emerged from the ground. They then proceeded Eastward, performing rituals of song and dance. A large area of Eucalypts and Casuarina now stand where the digging sticks emerged.

Dorothy’s art often refers to her traditional lands at Mina Mina, an area of salt pans and sandhills. She uses intricately applied dotwork to show the lines of salt and sand. This minimalist approach on the large scale paintings, pulls the eyes of the viewer up and down, inwards and outwards, from one side to the other.

Dorothy’s art is very highly regarded and she has become very collectible.

This painting is an extremely fine example of her use of coloured dots

to convey the form and movement of the sandhills at Mina Mina.
