Elizabeth Marks Nakamarra
Elizabeth was born in August 1959 in the Kintore region of the Northern Territory and is a Pintupi speaker. She was raised in Papunya by her step-father Turkey Tolson and her uncle Johnny Warrankula, both founding members of the Papunta Tula movement.
She studied at the Bachelor College in Alice Springs for three years and served as a council member for Kintore for a number of years.
Elizabeth commenced painting by helping her husband, Mick Namerari Tjapaltjarri, with his paintings. Since his death in 1998, she has become an artist in her own right. Her work focuses on the stories taught to her by her family.
Elizabeth is known for her Escher-like paintings, which use one colour with a contrasting lighter hue on a black background. The straight lines are made up of dragged dots, drawn at ninety degrees to each other, to build retreating and advancing line-tunnels.
Elizabeth has had many solo and joint exhibitions, and her work is found in many public and private collections.
