Emily Pwerle

Emily is believed to have been born c1922, which would put her in her late 80s. She is of the Anmatyerre/Alyawarr language group She lives in a tiny settlement of 100 people in the Utopia area.

Emily has had little exposure to Western culture and first picked up a paintbrush in 2004. Her extended family are all artists, including her famous older sister Minnie Pwerle. Minnie led the way and then encouraged her younger sisters Emily, Molly and Galya.

Emily quickly demonstrated that she had her own energetic style and colourful palette. She paints “Awelye”, an Anmatyerre word which refers to women’s business and ceremonies. It is depicted by a series of lines and symbols, criss-crossed patterns layered across the canvas, representing the designs painted on women’s bodies for ceremonies.

Emily has developed her own contemporary style and is proving to be an energetic, talented artist in the mould of her sister, Minnie.
