Josie Petrick Kemarre
| Josie was born c1953 into the Alyawarre/Anmatyerre language group. While born in Santa Teresa, about 80 kms south of Alice Springs, she has lived most of her life at the isolated and scattered Utopia community, 250 kms northeast of Alice Springs.Josie began painting around 1992 and within a short period displayed innovative interpretations of her Dreamings, culture and religion through a bold and dynamic approach to composition and colour. Her paintings depict the landscape and the seasonal cycle of wild bush berry plants and their seeds. The barren desert landscape is transformed after rain into abundant vegetation and the women gather the edible berries, which are a principal source of nutrition for the Aboriginal people.Josie’s paintings are in a number of important collections in Australia and she has exhibited overseas, in countries as diverse as China and the USA.These particular paintings create a sense of visual harmony, through the use of variegated fields of immaculately applied dotting.
