 Kudditji Kngwarreye
Kudditji was born c1928 at Alhalkere, Utopia, approx 230 kms Northeast of Alice Springs. Kudditji (pronounced Kubbitji) is an Anmatyerre elder and a custodian of his country. He is the younger brother of the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye, arguably the greatest of Australian artists.
After a traditional upbringing, he embarked on a long career as a stockman and also worked in a number of gold and other mines in the Northern Territory. He began to paint in the late 70s on boards, after being inspired by the movement started in Papunya. He painted the Dreamings and stories of his country in traditional dot style.
Toward the end of the 90s, his style began to change. He began to experiment with fresh techniques and interpretations of his country. Using a heavily loaded brush, vibrant colours and sweeping strokes, he painted in large blocks of colour. He proudly calls this work, “My Country”.
Kudditji is a respected and integral part of his land and culture. As an artist, he is internationally acclaimed and his works are unique and very collectible.
