Lorna Fencer Napurrula
|
Lorna was born c1920 into the Warlpiri traditional lifestyle in the Tanami Desert of central Australia. She passed away in December,2006. Lorna was a painter most of her life, starting with the traditional decorative body paint designs for women’s ceremonies. In 1986 together with Emily Kame Kngwarreye, she pioneered the women’s art movement away from the traditional iconography into more abstract representations. Her dreamings allowed her to paint subjects such as the Bush Yam, Bush Tomato, Caterpillar, Wallaby and certain men’s stories. Her seniority in her tribe and her strength of character, is reflected in her paintings. Liberal quantities of paint and layering of colours is used with an exuberance and depth not often seen in paintings from this region. Lorna was a dynamic, larger than life character. Her artworks are a celebration of painting, featuring spontaneous impulsive designs. She loved colour, especially bright reds and yellows. Her work is highly prized and part of every serious collection of Aboriginal art.
